Privacy Policy

This is the whole policy. It is short because Chord Lens collects very little.

Last updated 2 September 2026 · Applies to the Chord Lens Chrome extension and this website.

The short version. Chord Lens has no accounts and collects no personal data. It never accesses your microphone, your tab audio or your screen. The only thing the extension sends to our server is the eleven-character YouTube video ID of the video you are watching.

Chord analysis results are stored on our server, keyed to the video, so that replays load instantly. Nothing in that store identifies you.

Who runs Chord Lens

Chord Lens is an independent project. For any question about this policy or about your data, write to [email protected].

What the extension sends

When you click Chords on a YouTube video, the extension sends one request to our analysis server containing:

  • The YouTube video ID of the video you are watching, for example dQw4w9WgXcQ.
  • An application key that identifies the Chord Lens extension itself. It is the same for every installation and identifies the software, not you.

That is the complete list. The extension does not send your browsing history, the contents of other tabs, your YouTube account details, your IP-derived location, or any identifier assigned to you or your device.

What the extension never touches

  • Your microphone. Chord Lens does not request microphone permission and cannot record you.
  • Your tab audio or screen. Nothing is captured from your browser. Analysis is performed on our server, from the video's own audio.
  • Other websites. The extension runs only on YouTube pages.
  • Your YouTube account. Chord Lens has no access to your account, watch history, subscriptions or playlists.

What is stored, and where

On our server

For each video that has been analysed, our server keeps the analysis result so that anyone opening that video again gets the chart immediately rather than waiting for a second analysis. That record holds the video ID, the video's title and artist as published on YouTube, the detected chords, beat positions, musical key and tempo, and timing information about how long the analysis took.

This record describes a video, not a person. It contains no user identifier, no account, no session, no cookie and no device fingerprint. Two people who analyse the same video produce one identical record, and nothing in it distinguishes them.

In your browser

Your preferences — capo position, whether diagrams are shown, whether Simplify is on — are stored locally by the extension so they survive a page reload. They stay on your machine and are never transmitted.

In server logs

Like every web server, ours writes access logs: the requesting IP address, timestamp, requested path, response code and user agent. These exist to keep the service running and to stop abuse. They are rotated and deleted after 14 days. They are not used to build profiles, are not combined with analysis records, and are not shared.

Rate limiting is applied per application key, not per IP address and not per user.

This website

This site runs no analytics, sets no cookies, and makes no third-party requests. There is no tracking pixel, no advertising network, no font CDN and no embedded social widget. Loading this page contacts exactly one server: ours.

Links out to Buy Me a Coffee are ordinary links. If you follow one, that service's own privacy policy applies from that point.

Sharing

We do not sell, rent, trade or share data with advertisers, data brokers or any other third party. There is no personal data to sell.

Analysis records may be disclosed only if we are legally compelled to do so. Because those records identify videos rather than people, such a disclosure would reveal nothing about you.

Your rights

Because Chord Lens holds no personal data about you, there is no account to export, correct or delete. If you believe we hold something about you nonetheless, write to [email protected] and we will investigate and respond.

To remove the extension's locally stored preferences, uninstall Chord Lens from chrome://extensions; Chrome clears its storage with it.

Children

Chord Lens is not directed at children under 13 and knowingly collects no data from anyone, of any age.

Third-party services

Chord Lens retrieves audio for the video you select in order to analyse it. Chord Lens is an independent project and is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by YouTube or Google.

Changes to this policy

If what Chord Lens collects ever changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top is updated. Material changes will also be noted in the extension's Chrome Web Store listing.
